Non-toxic homemade bug spray via dōTERRA

If you know me, you know bugs are really not my thing.

My kids and I unfortunately have really bad reactions to bug bites or mites of any sort and I wanted to find a non-toxic way to “exterminate” our living space, without adding unwanted toxins or chemicals into the air. I had concerns of different types of bugs beginning with stink bugs. At that time, we had really old windows where bugs of any sort, specifically stink bugs which are slightly bigger than a quarter, were sliding in through the cracks. I'd open up our blinds in the morning and have about 4-5 stink bugs in just one window area. Horrifying! That was in our transition from summer to fall, but when we would transition from spring to summer we also experienced centipedes of ALL sizes, along with wasps in our indoor porch that were looking for a spot to build a nest. LAWWWD. I did a bit of research and came to the conclusion that I would

start with a blend of citronella, eucalyptus and peppermint in a glass spray bottle. I began to spray the blend all around the molding of the windows and on the actual windows themselves. I saw an instant change the next morning. Zero stink bugs. They couldn't stand the smell of the peppermint and eucalyptus with the plant oil's menthe base. I then began to spray this nice smelling non-toxic blend all around the house. I would do the moldings on the floor, corners of each bedroom, entrances of the house, etc. I then began to find dead centipedes instead of fast ones that were alive and moving, and eventually saw less and less as I continued to spray. Other small bugs began to die on the window sills and there was a confirmed decline in bug presence overall. #winning

This is what you need to do to keep your space bug-free, clean and non-toxic:

  • Get an amber glass spray bottle. (You can get one or more on Amazon for about $10-$20.)

  • Add 10 drops of dōTERRA peppermint essential oil, 10 drops of dōTERRA eucalyptus essential oil, and 10 drops of dōTERRA citronella essential oil into the open amber glass spray bottle.

  • Fill the amber spray bottle with water of your choice. (I use water directly from the sink.)

  • Close, shake and spray!

Voilà!

One thing I'd like to to highlight in not only making this effective homemade spray is that you want to ensure that you're using Grade A plant oils. There are misconceptions on essential oils and one is that people can treat them as they are all made equal. They are most certainly not. Many distributors use synthetic blends or alter their oils with fragrances to make them appear to be something that they're not. I can ensure you that in using dōTERRA essential oils you will not face those issues. I have gone from buying oils in stores that have given me headaches to trying different distributors whose oils burned my child's skin. dōTERRA has never done either. I have been utilizing their oils within my household and for my individual health for about three years and it has truly been life changing in living as holistically as possible.
